Unearthing solutions via the "question" tag

The “question” tag activates the forum’s Solved plugin and turns your topic into a request similar to a Stack Overflow post (remember those?). At first, it’ll just get an “unsolved” marker.

But mark a reply as the accepted answer, and two things happen: that reply gets pinned to the top of the thread, and the thread closes. Anyone who finds it later (via search, for example) gets the answer without wading through the whole conversation.

When to use it

Use the “question” tag when there’s a specific answer to find:

  • “My Nginx config throws a 502 — what am I missing?”
  • “What’s the right way to set up SSH key-only authentication on a new server?”
  • “My cron job isn’t running. Here’s my crontab entry — what’s wrong?”

If you’re looking for different takes or just want to explore a topic, use subject tags like “linux” or “automation” instead. Those threads work better as open discussions.

When your question gets answered

Click the “Solution” checkbox below the reply that fixed your problem. It gets pinned, the topic closes.

If you solved it yourself

If you figured it out before anyone replied, post a short note and mark that as the solution. Thirty seconds that can save the next person a lot of digging.
