Reviews for Ubiquiti’s new UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber are hitting YouTube, and it looks like there’s finally a UniFi firewall gateway that meets all of my needs.
Has all the normal UniFi bells and whistles that you might expect - WAN failover, UniFi controller powered management (runs it’s own controller, which would be rather nice to be able to sunset having to manage the UniFi controller in the network), the new policy based firewall features bringing it more in line with offerings from folks like Palo Alto and Fortinet, so on and so forth. However, the things that are really getting me excited are the two SFP+ ports (of which I currently only need 1 to connect to my core switch, and could use an Nbase-T SFP+ adapter to hook up my failover WAN connection) and the new (to me) IDS/IPS feature, with the rated throughput for that being up to 5 Gbit. Not too shabby.
I asked around in the Level1Techs forum to see if anyone lucky enough to grab one in there would be willing to do some Inter-VLAN routing tests for me. I’d like to replace my core switch with something that isn’t made by TP-Link after the recent discovery of some of their home gateways running very vulnerable Linux packages, and being able to buy a L2 managed switch instead of a L2+/L3 switch would save me quite a bit of money.
